  1. EAT AS SOON AS (AND WHEN) YOU FEEL HUNGRY.
    This means not skipping meals because you “don’t have time!” for a variety of reasons: it would slow your metabolism and you would risk eating too much afterward and losing the steady level of energy you want to maintain.

  2. EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT, OFTEN AND IN MODERATION.
    Unless you are intolerant or allergic to certain foods, there are no foods that you can or cannot eat. Have you ever seen a Naturally Thin person say no to pizza? Probably not, although they might leave a little on their plate because they’re full. If you eat “often” you’ll maintain a steady level of energy all day long. I have known naturally thin people who eat three times a day, and others who eat five times a day, or even seven (obviously with smaller portions of food). You are the one who manages the moderate quantities: if you are overweight and know you eat even after you are already full, you could give your stomach smaller portions so that it returns to its natural size.

  3. LEAVE SOMETHING ON YOUR PLATE.
    This is mandatory at the start, but then you can forget it. This rule is mandatory if you are someone who always eats everything (including the food on everyone else’s plate), until you’ve mastered the “power” of moderation and the sense of freedom that comes with it. If you have chronic back pain or frequent headaches, you might want to take a look at your lifestyle and ask yourself if you are getting enough exercise or talk about it with your doctor.

  7. SAVOR EACH BITE TO THE FULLEST.
    Eating is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Do you really want to lose out on such an enjoyable daily experience? As you savor each bite, it’s natural to put your fork down and prolong the eating process. This gives your stomach the time it needs (about twenty minutes or so they say) to send you the message that it’s full (“And what if I have a sandwich? Or a croissant and a cappuccino? How can I spend twenty minutes eating that?” You’re perfectly right. After having tasted and savoured your food, wait however long it takes to reach twenty minutes and then – after listening to your stomach – you’ll know whether you are full.)

  8. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHETHER YOU’RE FULL OR NOT, STOP.
    This is my favorite tip because, if you haven’t grasped many of the others, if it is difficult for you to understand when you are truly hungry and truly full, try this: even if you only think you might have eaten enough, stop. Put the rest in the fridge or back in the pot and do something else. If, after half an hour or an hour, you feel hungry, you can always eat a little something to fill yourself up and keep your energy level steady.
