Cure the chocolate craving with NLP

Every craving activates a dopamine reward response. Chocolate makes you feel good, but for some it is an obsession. Here is how to free yourself from the chocolate craving with a few Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) tips.

A bona fide drug
OK, so it’s a genuine drug, one you can be addicted to. So what? We live with any number of other addictions: we are addicted to the love and affection of our friends and family, sunlight, oxygen and fresh air… Each of us has addictions that trigger pleasure responses and set us on a virtuous cycle of reward and repetition. Chocolate is no different, and the trick lies in considering it a pleasure like any other.

Let’s compare and relativize it
So, let’s start with a simple NLP concept, i.e., relativizing and seeing the object of your craving and the situation from another point of view, one that is relative and less charged. What other pleasures do you have? What drives you to repeat a behavior? What do you like? Sunshine, reading books, watching movies, running, dancing, making love… what do you like that unleashes desire and triggers your dopamine response, causing you to feel and seek pleasure?

After that, take everything that you like and that makes you feel good, compare it to chocolate and relativize it. You’ll find that chocolate is not the only thing that makes you feel good. Naturally, it is helpful to find other, constructive “cravings” and not cravings that are “non-constructive” in the long term, like smoking. You want to cultivate constructive, healthy comparisons and thoughts in your mind.

Make it big and disagreeable
One of the simplest and most effective NLP techniques is to make something so big that it seems unreal. Think back to a time when, in the recent past, you were craving chocolate and ate way too much. Now imagine that you were in the same room, with a chocolate bar in your hand, and you were bringing it to your mouth… BUT, now imagine the chocolate bar grew to enormous, gigantic proportions. It was so big that you couldn’t even open your mouth wide enough to fit it all in, your jaw would have broken. You could barely even hold the chocolate bar up because it weighed a ton. All you could do is feel shocked and give up. Now imagine you turned away and walked off.

After you have tried out this trick imagining that it happened in the past, it will be useful to imagine that in the future, every time you hold a chocolate bar in your hand it will become enormous, heavy, cumbersome and painful to your arms and jaw. Naturally, for these visualizations to work, seeing it once won’t be enough to associate the discomfort and weirdness of the situation with the chocolate. Every visualization will need to be repeated.

Make it disgusting if you have to
Here is another one. Another, less popular technique (which, I must confess, is not my favorite) is to associate the object of your craving with something truly disgusting: crawling worms, cockroaches licking the chocolate, bird poo on the chocolate bar, cigarette ash or a food that you find absolutely revolting on top of it. Naturally, this exercise has you associate something disgusting with your chocolate craving, therefore disassociating pleasure from the craving. I recommend trying this exercise with a coach who can help you without overdoing the association of something disgusting or unpleasant.

Again in this case, the trick is to imagine a situation in the recent past in which you were eating chocolate with that truly disgusting thing on top and imagine that you then stopped, freed yourself of it and walked away. After that, I recommend always imagining a future in which you “could” risk eating those disgusting things, but it will never happen again because your disgust (for those familiar with NLP, this mechanism is an away-from meta program) will save you.

Change the submodality
A nicer way to try this trick is to visualize chocolate in an imaginary frame in front of you, then imagine the chocolate in black and white, and possibly cracked, or out of focus, transparent and vanishing into nothing. Another variation is to compare an image that represents your craving for chocolate with something that you find irritating (like a neighbor you can’t stand) or annoying (like listening to that neighbor’s stories). Associating that non-constructive feeling with the object of your craving will help you disassociate your desire from it.

Don’t name it
An incredibly helpful piece of advice for a method that is fun and practical is to “no longer name the thing”. Instead – if you find yourself thinking about it – think of it as “that thing”. Not naming it will keep your brain from finding it in your memory and initiating all those synapses that contain it, including those that trigger your chocolate craving.
