Losing weight naturally, lean mass, fat mass and your metabolism

How do you lose weight “naturally”? First, let’s explain what it means to “lose weight naturally.” Losing weight naturally means losing weight over the right amount of time for your body, steadily (although we know that your body will never lose the weight according to a specific schedule), eliminating fat mass, strengthening lean mass, WITHOUT harming your metabolism.

There are just a few, simple steps to follow with The Right Weight Forever, the diet-free weight loss method that I have been teaching since 2006:

  1. Eat right – this is the reason behind the seven smart moves, particularly “Eat as soon as you are hungry”, “Eat whatever you want in moderation”. In this article on the seven smart moves of The Right Weight Forever, you’ll learn what I mean about these simple moves.

  2. Exercise to reactivate your metabolism. This means sweating and feeling your heart beat faster and steadily. Today’s personal trainers, along with nutrition and metabolism experts, all agree on TWO RULES: 1. Exercising without reducing the amount of food you eat to the right quantities will not help you get back to your natural weight; 2. Exercise reactivates your metabolism but does NOT directly cause you to lose weight. Continue reading below for some practical tips.

  3. Tell the unconscious mind to do WHAT Naturally Thin people do and eliminate non-constructive habits that lead us to eat when we are not hungry. We now know that willpower is not enough. To change, we must rely on our self-motivation and – to do this – it is crucial that we know HOW TO TALK to our unconscious mind, i.e., the limbic system in our brain.

I am Debora Conti and I am a trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). I am not a personal trainer nor a nutritionist, so I am not qualified to provide you with detailed, customized meal plans.

However, I can explain a little bit about the difference between lean mass and fat mass, and in this article I will also talk about the metabolism and how we can speed it up.

Lean mass consists of: bones, muscles, essential fat and your internal organs. Fat mass is excess body fat. Women need more essential fat than men, which is why the lean mass between the two sexes is calculated differently. Fat mass depends on three factors: 1. the food we eat, 2. metabolism and 3. physical exercise.

From a mental, emotional and motivational standpoint, I always recommend starting from here: feeling that you are already a Naturally Thin person. BUT what does it mean to be a Naturally Thin person? It means that you act, think and believe as if you were already at your natural weight without any behavioral or emotional constraints. Naturally Thin people eat because they are hungry, know when they are full, taste and savor food and do not connect it with anything other than hunger or taste.


Here are a few suggestions for losing weight naturally without dieting:

  • Exercise at least 150 minutes per week. You can vary the kind of exercise you get or take up a sport/hobby. If you prefer to vary the type of exercise, here are a few ideas: jog for thirty minutes or less, walk for half an hour, ride your bike to the store or post office, swim for twenty minutes or more, these are all types of exercise that are motivating and fun.

  • Eat only because you are truly hungry and because it tastes good. With The Right Weight Forever, I always recommend eating only because you are hungry and only what you like, when both conditions apply.

  • Stop when your stomach tells you that it’s full. Respecting your fullness is fundamental to getting used to eating right and going back to filling your stomach until it is just right. Let your senses of taste and smell guide you.

  • Don’t eat for any other reason: for company, because you’re lonely, for comfort or because you’re nervous or bored… With The Right Weight Forever, you’ll learn specific techniques to change your habits and separate food from feelings that are not just the simple “pleasure of eating”.

  • Drink water if you think you might be hungry but it is not a meal time. Not only nutritionists, but all doctors recommend drinking water. It is worth considering if everyone recommends it. Listen to your thirst and relieve it. It will help you eat more correctly.

  • Eat carbohydrates daily to give fundamental energy to your brain and body, for the right sense of fullness and so you don’t fall into the vicious cycle of junk food that calls to you. This does not mean eating tons of carbohydrates or eating only bread or pasta. There are carbohydrates in fruit, vegetables and many grains.

  • Eat in moderation. It makes logical sense to eat based on your energy needs. Obviously this is difficult to calculate and it can vary! This is why there are no precise instructions for “eating right”. This is also why is it important to let your stomach guide you: it will tell you when it’s hungry and when it’s full. You’ll need a few days or weeks and a little self-observation).
