How do I motivate myself to lose weight?

Motivating yourself to lose weight is fundamental to achieving any goal… even weight loss. If you want to lose weight but do not believe you are motivated, please read this article.



In this article, I want to talk to you about motivating yourself to lose weight and to maintain your target weight once you have reached it… forever! Can you image Walt Disney if, on his umpteenth sketch of a mouse, had said, “Nope, it’ll never work with this little choo choo train!”? And what about those computer geniuses working away in their garage? What if, after a month, they had given up and said, “We don’t have any money… Let’s just sell our idea to someone else… Who do we think we are?!” This happens to everyone and it can happen to YOU.

Runners, parents, nurses, teachers, whoever is working to support their family, studying to graduate as soon as they can, getting up at all hours of the night to feed a hungry baby… and you, too, who show motivation and perseverance in all that inspires you.


Let be clear about MOTIVATION: why it works and how to make it work for you.


Motivation: who are you?
If you look up the word “motivation” in the dictionary, you’ll find something along the lines of: “Motivation is the series of reasons for attempting to satisfy a primary or secondary need”. But no one says how to cultivate it or where to find it. I believe that motivation is a picture, an image, a word, a feeling of strength, control, satisfaction and freedom that drives us to do things that might not bring us instant gratification but will eventually get us to our ultimate goal. The stronger these words/images/feelings are, the easier it will be to stay on course.


Motivation: where are you?
OK, so, I really want to lose weight but why can’t I? Why don’t I have the right motivation? Debora, why do I lose my motivation after a few days? And everything goes back to the way it used to be?
I’ll tell you why. Look at what you do well and try to remember all the times you slipped up, the difficulties you encountered and all the times you had to get up, dust yourself off and try again, the determination you had to show. Now dig deeper and deeper until you find the genuine PASSION underlying all that hard work. The passion of a runner who loves her body and is training for a marathon. The passion of a teacher who loves when her students sit still for five minutes coloring and remember to say “Please” and “Thank you”. The passion of a nurse when she sees her patients recovering and smiling back at her. YOUR passion when you do the things you have taken years to master: cooking, listening to your loved ones, organizing, managing, creating, playing a musical instrument, … Passion can be found in everything you do, even learning to type, to mend your clothes and to route the best way to get somewhere.

Motivation & Passion.
Does passion drive motivation? Yes. Passion gives you the strength and energy to overcome boredom, monotony, slip-ups, anger, disappointment and mistakes. Passion helps you feel the excitement of your achievement even when it is still far off. Passion shows you what you need to do to get there. Passion leads you to encourage yourself in your head.

Find your motivation, find your passion and your body will lose weight as a result. Here are some tips for motivating yourself to lose weight:

  1. Focus on the “big” goal, which is not the ultimate, end goal, because the ultimate, end goal is to maintain your target weight and a balance between muscle mass and body fat. You’ll get there by listening to your stomach and enjoying a healthy relationship with food and freedom at the table. This is your “big” goal.

  2. Focus on your monthly, weekly and daily mini-goals. This is a very helpful step. Even if a couple of days slip by without you working on your goals, so be it. When you get back on track, think about your goals and they will inspire and motivate you.

  3. Find images to represent your mini-goals. The beach, a vacation, a walk, a wedding with a beautiful gown to wear, a dinner with friends, a race, relaxation, the freedom of sitting at the table with a little food left on your plate.

  4. Find words, speeches, sounds or music for each of those mini-goals. Clearly, your daily mini-goals will repeat, and you can vary the words and sounds.

  5. Last but not least, feel the magic of those images and words/sounds/music inside you. Your goal is to captivate your nervous system. Inspire it, excite it, brainwash it into doing what you consciously want. And so it will be … effortlessly.
