The right mindset for losing weight

Think of playing a musical instrument, how well you dance, how well you play tennis or cook a delicious lasagna, make a moist cake, crochet like a skilled granny, what a good organizer you are, a good listener, an excellent problem solver…

As with all the things you are good at, you need the right mindset to lose weight WELL without dieting: desire and method.

Here are five suggestions for cultivating the right mindset to lose weight:

  1. KNOW THAT YOU CAN DO IT
    After a medical check-up and considering any hormonal issues with your doctor, know that you can lose weight and shed fat mass in the right amount of time and forever. Even if you suffer from hyperthyroidism or diabetes, you can lose weight; rather, you should be at a natural weight. Know that you can do it, that there is no real obstacle to achieving the right weight. Look around at your peers who are not overweight or who have lost excess weight healthfully and in the long term.

  2. TAKE A LONG-TERM VIEW
    Losing weight on a bad diet that harms your mind and body will not work and you know it. Instead, take a long-term view. If you are twenty years old and have the time to go to the gym, you will have expectations in a shorter (but still healthy) amount of time than a fifty-year-old woman who hasn’t exercised in decades. But it’s not impossible: anyone at any age can become “Naturally Thin”.

  3. LET YOUR STOMACH BE YOUR GUIDE
    Be aware that your stomach is the boss. Your stomach decides when it is hungry, when it is full, not “gluttony”, not that craving… Practice listening to your stomach and letting it guide you. Listen and obey. How long has it been since you last heard your stomach growl with a clear, unmistakable sign of hunger? If it’s been too long, take the time to rediscover it. How long has it been since you left the table feeling light and full of energy?

  4. BE POSITIVE
    But not in the sense that you “hope” everything goes well and you cover your eyes whenever the going gets rough. What I mean is to talk to yourself in a positive way, be encouraging and correct what you want and eliminate what you do not want. How? Words are magic: don’t say what you don’t want, but use the past tense to refer to what you no longer want to do, think or believe. Talk about what you want to be, want to do and want to believe in the present tense. Give yourself positive reinforcement.

  5. DON’T LISTEN TO “GLUTTONY”
    Your enjoyment of food should always be associated with genuine hunger. If you aren’t truly hungry, that craving can wait. Otherwise, you can satisfy it with tiny portions and saver them fully to let your senses sing.

A small square of chocolate, for example: just one, even if you’re not hungry, is pleasurable and does no harm. Always remember to associate true hunger with taste, so you don’t end up eating something that we all know is good for us but we don’t like, without overcoming our desire for something good to eat… The desire will always find a way to be satisfied, even if you’re not hungry!
