Weight loss tips … let your stomach guide you

“Debora, what should I do to lose weight?” This is the typical question that people ask me at coaching sessions and in courses. The very first tip that I recommend is not one of the moves for losing weight at the table or changing your behavior, but has to do with language instead: replace “I must” with the much better “I want”. That changes everything, doesn’t it?

Here are a few weight loss tips that I always recommend:

1 The number one weight loss tip is let to your stomach guide you so you’ll eat only because you are genuinely hungry. In general, there are two different cases. There are overweight people who eat only because they’re truly hungry, but they’ve lost their sense of fullness, and then there are overweight people who say they only rarely eat to satisfy real hunger. They say they eat out of routine, habit or for emotional release… In both cases, The Right Weight Forever teaches you to eat only when you’re truly hungry and to stop when you are full.


What does it mean to eat because you are truly hungry?
It means listening to the unmistakable signals that your body sends you to say that it is hungry. We explore this during my courses and everyone explains what signals they receive: low energy, growling stomach, irritability, tension, heightened senses, low blood sugar… We find that not everyone has all these symptoms and each of us is more sensitive (or used) to certain messages from our bodies. The problem is that often, out of habit, we don’t always listen to them. It is important to satisfy real hunger so that your metabolism continues working properly. In fact, the first step to speeding up your metabolism is precisely “Eating when you are truly hungry”.

2 The second of my weight loss tips …starting with your stomach, is based on The Right Weight Forever method and it goes hand in hand with the first: let your fullness guide you. Sometimes I hear the argument: “But I like to eat…” Of course you do! Naturally Thin people like eating too. Together, we learn how to eat out of true hunger + pleasure + taste and how to stop eating when you are full. The Right Weight Forever method teaches you to listen to your sense of smell and your sense of taste and to feel when your stomach is full. This is because a lot of people would risk not making it to their goal if they only listened to their stomach telling them it’s full. But your senses never lie.


Why is it so difficult to eat because you are truly hungry and stop when you are full?
Because we eat too quickly, because when we are at work meals are not a priority. And, if you look closely, the very same people who call themselves hearty eaters tend to “forget” to eat (they hear their stomach’s messages but put their hunger on standby) when they are racing to meet a deadline until they finish their work. Big mistake! It’s far better to take a 20-minute break, eat something healthy and simple that tastes good, and then return to that project with more focus and energy.

I frequently talk with overweight people who eat too quickly, so they don’t savor and truly enjoy their nourishment. They run the obvious risk of eating more as they seek legitimate pleasure in quantity, rather than quality. And this brings us to the third of my weight loss tips, which is putting down your fork and savoring each bite.

Try asking yourself these simple questions:

  • Am I genuinely hungry right now?

  • Is what I am eating still nourishing me or am I eating it out of habit?

  • Am I savouring and enjoying what I’m eating?
